The William Daylor High School team won first place in this year's competition.

Sacramento County’s Annual Academic Bowl offered several dozen local students a lot of “shake, rattle and roll.” At the competition—held the morning of March 16 at Rosemont High School—students from local high schools demonstrated what they had learned about earthquakes (this year’s theme). Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools David W. Gordon welcomed the students, faculty advisors, and judges.

In the first event, each of the five participating schools used straws to construct a small structure that was tested on its ability to withstand a simulated earthquake. The second event consisted of an informational slideshow presentation about earthquakes. In addition to mastering the academic content, which was based on California’s Content Standards, students also learned about teamwork, computer and presentation skills, goal setting, and leadership.

Awards were presented at a luncheon during which Assistant Superintendent Matt Perry, Ed.D. and County Board of Education Trustees Jacquelyn Levy, Greg Geeting, and Heather Davis handed out awards and congratulated participants.
