The Sacramento County Board of Education has proclaimed October 21–31 as Red Ribbon Week in Sacramento County for 2009.

The Sacramento County Board of Education has adopted a resolution proclaiming October 23-31, 2009, as Red Ribbon Week in Sacramento County. The National Family Partnership has declared "Drug Free is the Key" as the official theme for the 2009 Red Ribbon Week Campaign.

The Red Ribbon Campaign was started after the murder of DEA agent Kiki Camarena by drug traffickers in Mexico City, in 1985. This began the continuing tradition and displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a Drug-Free America.

The National Family Partnership organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign in 1988. Since that time, the campaign has reached millions of U.S. children. The week-long event is a way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs.

Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America.
