Teacher Induction Program Overview
The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) School of Education offers a two-year, job-embedded, individualized program of support in a teacher’s first year of teaching to clear a preliminary single-subject, multiple-subject, or education specialist credential. With teacher-designed goals as the foundation, teachers develop their skills and work toward mastery of the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP) while working as teachers in our region’s school sites.
Prerequisites or admission requirements
To enroll in SCOE Teacher Induction, participants must:
- Have a preliminary multiple subject, single subject or education specialist credential
- Be employed as the teacher of record for a consistent group of students (full- or part-time employment is acceptable)
- Have an induction renewal requirement with the Commission on Teacher Credential for the preliminary credential
Program Completion Requirements
Successful completion of the Teacher Induction Program includes:
- Completion of two years of Individualized Learning Plan development, implementation, and related tasks, including observation and reflection. (Refer to Year at a Glance Program Requirements for teachers and mentors.)
- 35 hours each year of reflective conversation with a qualified mentor
SCOE/District Support
Support for SCOE Induction participants is provided through a collaborative partnership between the school district/site and the SCOE School of Education. A mentor teacher (from the district/site) provides an average of not less than one hour per week of on-site peer coaching.
SCOE Induction directors and staff will actively assist candidates in meeting Induction requirements, consult with candidates regularly and provide professional learning designed to provide the needed support to complete Induction.
The SCOE Induction Program combines practical, relevant goal-setting with mentoring. We recognize that our candidates bring a wealth of prior experience to their work as teachers. Our program is designed to support teacher-selected professional learning that demonstrates strong instructional practice aligned to the CSTP.
