Getting Hired

The basic process of becoming a tutor involves four steps:
1. Submit an application.
2. Enjoy an interview!
3. Persevere through the formalities.
4. Triumph through placement!

Application – You may access an application in PDF format or we can mail one through traditional channels to your home.

Interview – Once you’ve submitted an application you will meet with the tutor coordinator or attend a tutor information session to discuss your interest in tutoring, get answers to any questions you might have about tutoring, and learn important information about opportunities within the program.

Formalities – The “formalities” are the requirements of being hired by the Sacramento County Office of Education to work in a school. The formalities include:

Providing proof of eligibility to work
Being fingerprinted for a background check
Having a TB (tuberculosis) skin test
Signing a lots of employee paperwork

For more complete details see Tutor Hiring Instructions.

Placement – Once you’ve had your second appointment with personnel and completed the hiring process, it’s time to contact the tutor coordinator to arrange a tutoring schedule. Depending upon your schedule (how much time you have available), what the schedules and needs are of our schools, this process can be incredibly tedious or surprisingly easy. School placements are made on a first-come/first served basis and consequently, as the school year progresses, fewer sites are available and some of the most convenient and attractive are already taken. Tutors with blocks of time available (in the morning or afternoon) on Tuesday and Thursday or a Monday/Wednesday or Wednesday/Friday combination are the easiest to place.
