Academic Program

Each year the Sacramento Cal-SOAP program hires up to 30-40 college students to serve as tutors.  Tutors receive a minimum of 16 hours of training and work primarily in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) classrooms, where they facilitate twice-weekly collaborative learning groups.  Students are responsible for bringing difficult academic problems or questions to tutorial sessions, where they work together, aided by the Cal-SOAP tutor.

What is AVID®?

AVID is an elective class that motivates and prepares educationally disadvantaged students to attend college and attain a four-year university degree.  The AVID class supports students in college preparatory subject areas and teaches academic achievement skills (i.e., note-taking, time management, organization). More than 90% of AVID students subsequently enroll in college; seventy percent attend 4-year universities.

AVID

  • Selects average students with potential who otherwise might not succeed in “college prep” classes
  • Increases the number of middle and high school students taking rigorous academic classes (including honors, dual credit, and Advanced Placement courses)
  • Provides a developed curriculum (writing, study skills, college entrance, and multi-subject tutorials)
  • Teaches critical thinking and collaborative learning through small groups led by college student tutors
  • Teaches study skills and long-term academic survival/success skills
  • Succeeds in sending the majority of its students to four-year colleges and universities
