Under No Child Left Behind, the California Department of Education (CDE) and each local educational agency must identify any school that has not made adequate yearly progress (AYP) for at least two years as in Program Improvement (PI). Schools in Program Improvement are subject to increasing requirements and sanctions. The requirements for each year of Program Improvement are outlined in the
Program Improvement Requirements Table (refer to publications section below).
CDE must identify for Program Improvement any Local Educational Agency that has not made AYP at the local agency level. PI LEAs must notify parents of the PI status of the LEA, conduct a districtwide needs assessment and revise their LEA Plans to increase student achievement in the LEA.
The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) provides resources and support for Program Improvement schools and districts through the
Regional System of District and School Support (RSDSS), Capital Region. SCOE also provides a wide variety of professional development opportunities and consultation to help schools and districts improve instruction, increase student achievement, and avoid program improvement status.
