The Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) is a twenty-hour course that was developed by the CSU in collaboration with California high school teachers and administrators. It is fully aligned with California Content Standards for English language arts and literacy.
The Expository Reading and Writing Course:
- Deepens students' critical reading, writing, and thinking skills
- Emphasizes in-depth study of expository, analytical, and argumentative writing
- Prepares students to read and write academic prose effectively and strategically
- Includes an assignment template for improving expository reading and writing across the curriculum
The 11th and 12th grade courses have been approved by the University of California as meeting the English (subject "b") component of the "a-g" requirements.
Modules are also available for grades 9–10 (four modules for each grade level). Participation is open to high school English language arts teachers. Counselors and administrators are also welcome to attend.
ERWC for middle school English teachers is an eighteen-hour professional learning series. The middle school ERWC follows the same structure as the high school course. There are four modules for 7th grade and four modules for 8th grade.
