Student and Educational Services
This program provides individuals an opportunity to take a voluntary test that allows them to earn the legal equivalent of a high school diploma. The exam consists of two sections: English language arts and Mathematics. The English language arts section includes a Language subtest and a Reading subtest. Eligible persons who pass both sections of the CHSPE are awarded a Certificate of Proficiency by the California State Board of Education. The exam is given two or three times per year at testing centers throughout the state.
Any individual meeting one of the following requirements on the test date may take the CHSPE: 1) at least 16 years old, or 2) have been enrolled in the tenth grade for one academic year or longer, or 3) will complete one academic year of enrollment in the tenth grade at the end of the semester during which the next regular CHSPE administration will be conducted.
