Yvonne Thornton, one of the two County Teachers of the Year, along with the district Teachers of the Year, got to meet the River Cats mascot on-field before the April 24 game.

Fans at Sutter Health Park cheered as the Sacramento River Cats paid tribute to the Sacramento County Teachers of the Year during their game against the Oklahoma City Dodgers on Sunday.

The baseball team helped the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) recognize 14 district Teachers of the Year 2022 as outstanding educators. The teachers received free tickets and food vouchers—courtesy of sponsor SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union—and were also recognized on the field prior to the start of the April 24 game.

Yvonne Thornton (Folsom Cordova USD), one of Sacramento County’s two Teachers of the Year 2022, threw a ceremonial first pitch before game time.

This is the sixteenth year the River Cats have recognized the area’s top teachers with an event dedicated to Teachers of the Year. Last month, the Teachers of the Year were also honored at a Sacramento Kings game.

The Sacramento County Teachers of the Year Program is coordinated annually by SCOE to recognize the achievements of local educators and to raise awareness of the valuable role that teachers play in the lives of their students and in the community.
