Building equitable futures starts in the classroom. Recognizing the need to provide support for educators as they review their instructional practices, the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) has collaborated with The Education Trust–West—a team of teachers, researchers, and others—to create a toolkit called A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction.
The guide presents an integrated approach to math that centers on Black, Latinx, and multilingual students in grades 6–8, addressing racism and barriers to equity in their education. It matches instruction with education standards for each grade and suggests ways to create conditions for all students to thrive. Resources are provided for teachers to use as they plan their curriculum, and there are opportunities for ongoing self-reflection.
The five sections of the toolkit offer guidance for educators as they navigate the individual and collective journey from equity to anti-racism. Teachers, instructional coaches, and curriculum writers are also invited to register for a series of webinars that will be held in October. The series will offer more information about each section.
