If you like fast-paced, high-spirited academic competition and want to help dedicated and hardworking teens realize their goals, then the Sacramento County Academic Decathlon needs you!

The 39th annual competition will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Folsom High School. Twenty-nine high school teams will compete, including teams from Butte County and Placer County. The competition has grown this year to involve nearly 400 students. The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE), which presents the program, needs volunteers to serve as speech judges, interview judges, and homeroom proctors.

Volunteers often tell me how rewarding it was to help out and be able to work with such gifted students, said Craig Irish, SCOE Coordinator for Student Events and Competitions. And it means a lot to the students that people give their time to help them.

Those interested in volunteering should visit the Decathlon Volunteers page and follow the link to register as a volunteer by January 31.

About the Decathlon

The Sacramento County Academic Decathlon is a competitive event that stimulates academic achievement and honors “athletes of the mind.” The competition provides students the opportunity to participate in an educational forum, which fosters a deep respect for knowledge, cooperation, and self-esteem. This premier academic competition isn’t possible without the many community volunteers who contribute their time each year.
