College Financial Aid Workshops for Parents and Students

Senator Deborah Ortiz and Sacramento College Horizons Consortium Sponsor Event

SCOE News

The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) has announced that a series of free college financial aid information workshops for parents and students will take place throughout the month of February.

The "Cash for College" workshops, sponsored by Senator Deborah Ortiz in conjunction with the Sacramento College Horizons Consortium — a program administered by SCOE — will assist parents in completing forms necessary for Cal Grants and other forms of financial aid for their college-bound students.

The first workshop, set for February 5, will also offer a college fair with information and application materials.

Attendance at each of the workshops is free. Reservations should be made online or via telephone: (916) 961-1482.

Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools David W. Gordon said, "We are pleased to help provide these services to families in the Sacramento region. As members of the College Horizons team, our staff work closely with area high schools, colleges and universities year-round to encourage and assist students in applying for college." He said that the free workshops are part of a statewide effort to provide free, professional assistance to families completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Cal Grant GPA Verification Form. The FAFSA is required for any student seeking federal financial aid, including grants, employment opportunities, and loans at most schools across the U.S.

The deadline to apply for Cal Grants is March 2, 2005.

The Sacramento Cal-SOAP (California Student Opportunity & Access Program) College Horizons Consortium is a Sacramento-area partnership involving secondary schools, colleges, and universities, including Los Rios Community College District; California State University, Sacramento; the University of California, Davis; and the Sacramento County Office of Education.
