Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) teacher Kathy Johnson received exciting news on February 1 from "Good Day Sacramento," the morning TV show broadcast weekdays on UPN 31 KMAX.

Reporter Tina Macuha visited Johnson's classroom at Marengo Ranch Elementary School to award Johnson and Instructional Assistants Bobbie Bulmer and Naomi Burns the "Head of the Class" honor for February 2001. Channel 31's "Good Day Sacramento" bestows the "Head of the Class" award each month to an outstanding educator.

As "Head of the Class" honorees, the staff were featured in a 5 February "Good Day Sacramento" story. They also received a $100 classroom gift certificate from The Report Card store.

Johnson, Bulmer and Burns serve children in grades 4-6 who have severe physical disabilities. Working alongside the team is Nick Vallejo, who provides direct assistance as a personal aide to one of the students.

Johnson, who has worked for the Sacramento County Office of Education since January 1996, was recently chosen as a SCOE Certificated Employee of the Month. She and the team were nominated for the Channel 31 award by a parent of one of the students.

Nominations for the "Head of the Class" award may be sent to: "Good Day Sacramento," KMAX, 500 Media Place, Sacramento, CA 95815.
