WHY: The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) will host its annual recognition ceremony for State Seal of Biliteracy recipients on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. The Seal of Biliteracy is awarded to seniors who have obtained proficiency in English competency and at least one other language by meeting specific oral and written criteria. Many have also demonstrated proficiency in multiple languages.
This year’s keynote speaker is Mariana Corona Sabeniano, Chief of Staff in the California State Senate and Sacramento County Board of Education Trustee. Her active involvement in various leadership roles to advance the Sacramento region has led her to recently be included by The Sacramento Bee in its inaugural list of Latino Changemakers. She was also named a “40 Under 40” recipient by the Sacramento Business Journal in 2020.
The recognition ceremony will be attended by school administrators, teachers, parents, and members of the community—all coming together to celebrate the outstanding students who have demonstrated proficiency in English, plus one or more world languages.
