Earn your credential while serving as a paid, full-time classroom teacher



We offer an intensive two-year Intern Program to provide second career professionals and recent graduates a non-traditional pathway into teaching. Our Intern Program includes practical, relevant coursework for Single Subject Math or Science, Mild to Moderate Support Needs and Multiple Subject candidates.

The SCOE Intern Program differs from traditional credential programs in the following ways:

  • Candidates complete a mandatory 120 hour Preservice
  • Interns are hired as full time, paid classroom teachers
  • Interns are not supervised by a master teacher
  • Interns are not student teachers
  • Credential coursework is concurrent with paid teaching assignment

The Intern Program supports candidates in a variety of ways during the mandatory Preservice, as a full time teacher, and throughout the two-year Intern Program. Intern teachers are assigned an on-site mentor and receive ongoing coaching from SCOE supervisors as well as faculty from the School of Education. All credential classes are carefully sequenced to ensure interns are well prepared for their first teaching assignment.

How does the Intern Program work?


Eligibility for the Intern Program (and employment as a paid, full-time teacher) begins with successful completion of 120 hours of Preservice including: structured classroom observations, lesson planning, strategies for English learners, assessment, classroom management, and high quality first instruction. Preservice courses are offered in the evenings.

Candidates are not eligible for the Intern Program, or to serve as a full time teacher of record, until Preservice coursework has been completed and all prerequisites met.
