Cal-SOAP Academic Tutoring

Each year the Sacramento Cal-SOAP program hires up to 50-60 college students to serve as tutors.  Tutors receive a minimum of 16 hours of training and work primarily in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) classrooms, where they facilitate twice-weekly collaborative learning groups.  Students are responsible for bringing difficult academic problems or questions to tutorial sessions, where they work together, aided by the Cal-SOAP tutor.

About AVID

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an elective class that motivates and prepares educationally disadvantaged students to attend college and attain a four-year university degree. The AVID class supports students in college preparatory subject areas and teaches academic achievement skills (i.e., note-taking, time management, organization). More than 90% of AVID students subsequently enroll in college; seventy percent attend 4-year universities.
