School District Elections

The County Superintendent of Schools, as provided in the California Education Code, is responsible for calling elections, upon the action of any school district or community college governing board, to fill school district or community college district board vacancies (Education Code § 5091). The County Superintendent, as provided in Education Code § 5019 et. seq., is also responsible for calling an election in matters associated with school district governing boards, including increasing or decreasing the number of board members, creating or abolishing trustee areas, and methods of electing governing board members. In matters associated with the reorganization of school districts, the County Superintendent is responsible for calling an election as ordered by the State Board of Education or the County Committee on School District Organization.
