Board Recognizes February 2011 Employees of the Month

The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is one of 58 county offices located throughout the state. Approximately 700 full-time and more than 2,500 part-time SCOE staff work year-round providing services which complement and supplement those offered by public school districts in the County of Sacramento. Over 230,000 K-12 students are served by public schools in Sacramento County.

February 2011 Classified Employee of the Month​

Samia Abdelmalek, a Para-Educator was nominated by Principal Mike Borgaard for her contributions to the Sacramento County Office of Education. Ms. Abdelmalek works with students at SCOE's El Centro Jr./Sr. High School located within the Sacramento County Probation Department's Juvenile Hall facility. She assists teachers in the classroom and works individually with students, which requires a multitude of skills. Says her supervisor, "The Para-Educator role at El Centro School has transitioned to a new model in the past school year, and Samia has made this transition seamlessly. She puts the needs of students first and foremost, and her work at El Centro is marked with courtesy, compassion and respect." He notes that she enjoys working with students and brings value to their educational development by responding to their learning needs. Among the tools she has developed are mini-lessons and math quick reference guides which exponentially increase students' subject matter knowledge. Concludes her supervisor, "Ms. Abdelmalek demonstrates the highest level of professionalism in her interactions with students and staff. We are fortunate to have her as a member of the El Centro team." Ms. Abdelmalek has been a Sacramento County Office of Education employee since January 2001.

February 2011 Certificated Employees of the Mon​th

Teachers Kevin Elkington and Canyon Twer were nominated by Interim Principal Jaime Calderon for their contributions to the Community Schools Program of the Sacramento County Office of Education. Both Mr. Elkington and Mr. Twer teach high school students—mostly seniors—at SCOE's LINKS Academy campus situated within the Boys and Girls Club of Sacramento. Mr. Elkington teaches English language arts and math to prepare students to undertake the GED exam. He presents his students with a tangible, goal-focused course of study that contributes to student success. Mr. Twer teaches the Regional Occupational Program Sports Therapy class, which introduces students to a career path that for some may lead to becoming a personal trainer. According to their supervisor, both teachers present the students with multiple opportunities for continuing education. Besides covering the academic curriculum, they intensively assist students in developing employability skills and navigating the college enrollment process. Says their supervisor, "Mr. Elkington and Mr. Twer go above and beyond the call of duty. They embrace SCOE's LINKS model in its truest sense." Mr. Elkington has been a Sacramento County Office of Education employee since February 2008; Mr. Twer has been a SCOE employee since November 2007.
