Foster Youth Services Coordinating Program
The Sacramento Countywide Foster Youth Services Coordinating Program (FYSCP) is part of a statewide system of programs focused on improving education outcomes for students in foster care.
Most children placed in foster care have suffered trauma as a result of parental neglect or abuse. This trauma, coupled with the need to adjust to new environments in a residential and educational setting, often places numerous stressors on children that may compromise their ability to adjust to new educational expectations and curricula. The experiences of foster care can be overwhelming and incapacitating, hindering their ability to learn. Research studies have demonstrated that foster youth are more likely to repeat one or more grades, are twice as likely to drop out of school as non-foster youth, and are less likely to earn a high school diploma.
Working collaboratively with local school districts, charter schools, public agencies, and community groups, FYSCP provides training and resources on promising practices targeted to build capacity to improve the education outcomes of students in foster care.
