Certificated Jobs
Certificated school employees are credentialed professionals who provide direct instruction, counseling, and educational leadership in California’s schools. These educators play a central role in student learning and development, from teaching in classrooms to designing curriculum and supporting student wellness. Certificated positions require appropriate credentials issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Common roles include classroom teachers, special education teachers, school counselors, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, and school administrators such as principals and instructional coaches.
Paths to Becoming an Educator
SCOE supports the preparation and development of high-quality teachers and education leaders for the Sacramento region through many programs, including the SCOE School of Education. Aspiring leaders can earn their Preliminary Administrative Services Credential through the Leadership Institute. Additionally, the School of Education offers induction programs to support teachers and administrators in clearing their preliminary credentials. SCOE offers many learning opportunities and other support resources that help educators grow.

Professional Learning Opportunities
Training and development is critical for educators, helping them stay current with new teaching methods, technologies, and curriculum changes. It also provides an opportunity for growth and reflection, allowing educators to enhance their skills and build new ones. SCOE offers a wide variety of training for existing teachers.

Classified Jobs
Classified school employees are the essential, behind-the-scenes professionals who help California’s schools run smoothly every day. From transporting students safely to maintaining clean and welcoming campuses, they provide vital services that support teaching and learning. These non-certificated staff members work in a variety of roles across school districts, contributing to student success in countless ways. Common classified job categories are: Clerical and Administrative Services, Custodial and Maintenance Services, Food and Nutrition Services, Health and Student Services, Paraprofessional Services, Security Services, Skilled Trades, Technical Services, and Transportation Services.
School or Central Office Administration/Management
School and central office administrators are the leadership backbone of California’s public education system. These certificated professionals oversee academic programs, manage school operations, and guide staff to ensure student success across campuses and districts. Working at school sites or district offices, they shape policy, support educators, and drive continuous improvement. Examples of administrative roles include school principals, vice principals, district superintendents, directors of curriculum and instruction, special education administrators, and human resources or business services leaders.
