Today, May 8, is California Day of the Teacher. The day is set aside to honor the instructional excellence in our public schools.
To mark the occasion, the
Sacramento County Board of Education passed a resolution at its meeting last night formally designating May 8, 2019, as
California Day of the Teacher. The resolution (Resolution No. 19-04) states that the “Day of the Teacher should be a day for local education agencies, parents, public officials, and the community to recognize the dedication and commitment of teachers who are educating our children.” Day of the Teacher is celebrated on the second Wednesday in May in accordance with
Education Code § 37222.10.
The Board of Education also passed a resolution that pays tribute to the outstanding work of classified school employees. The resolution (Resolution No. 19-05) proclaims the week of May 19–25, 2019, as
Classified School Employee Week in Sacramento County. It recognizes the services of classified school employees and states that “classified employees provide services that enable the County Office of Education to respond effectively to the needs of students and their families, teachers, administrators, and other staff, and the needs of the greater community.” California Classified School Employee Week is designated as the third full week of May in accordance with
Education Code § 45460.
Classified school employees include secretaries, clerks, custodians, paraprofessional educators, bus drivers, food service workers, maintenance and warehouse workers, and many other support personnel in school districts and county offices of education.
