High School Graduation Held on 12/19/19 for SCOE Students

Court School and Community School Students Receive Diplomas

In a ceremony today at the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) Conference Center, more than 30 students from multiple schools were recognized with high school diplomas in the fourth Community Schools Program graduation this year.

“A high school diploma is like your passport to a better-paying job and a better future. This graduation shows how capable you all are of reaching your goals when you commit yourselves to them,” Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools David W. Gordon told the graduates. “But you know you still have plenty of hard work to do, and there are so many things within your reach.”

Guadalupe Delgado, Director of the Sacramento Cal-SOAP Consortium, was the speaker at the commencement. Cal-SOAP serves students in elementary, middle, and high schools throughout Sacramento County, providing tutoring services to students. It also delivers a college and financial aid advising program to nine high schools.

Senior Extension Program Helps Students Complete Their Education

The majority of today’s graduates earned diplomas through SCOE’s Senior Extension Program. The program was launched in 2016 to re-engage students who are in jeopardy of dropping out of high school, or who have been out of school and want to return to complete requirements for their diplomas.

The program involves a combination of independent study and classroom work that allows students to earn credits while still fulfilling work and family obligations—things that would otherwise have prevented them from completing their high school education.

Senior Extension is offered at the following SCOE school sites: North Area Community School, Gerber Jr./Sr. High School, and Elinor Lincoln Hickey Jr./Sr. High School. Services are also offered in Galt.
