At its July 11 meeting, the
Sacramento County Board of Education voted to make a provisional appointment to fill a vacancy for Trustee Area 1. The post, with a term expiring in June 2018, became vacant following the resignation of Trustee Greg Geeting.
Trustee Area 1 represents the following communities: College Greens, Curtis Park, downtown and midtown Sacramento, East Sacramento, Elder Creek, Florin, Hollywood Park, Land Park, McKinley Park, River Park, Tahoe Park, Vintage Park, and portions of South Land Park and Vineyard. The area also includes a major portion of Sacramento City Unified, and small portions of Elk Grove Unified and Twin Rivers Unified.
When a Board member resigns four or more months before the end of a County Board member’s term, within 60 days of a resignation or vacancy, the Board must either order an election or make a provisional appointment to fill the vacancy. The Board considered two options (ordering an election or making a provisional appointment). According to the Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections Department, a special election potentially could have cost the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) between $1.14 and $2.28 million.
The Board will consider application packets, interview candidates, and make a provisional appointment at its meeting on August 15, 2017.

Application packets for the Area 1 seat must be received—not postmarked—by 4 p.m. on August 9, 2017. Packets should be submitted to the President of the Sacramento County Board of Education either in person at the David P. Meaney Education Center (10474 Mather Boulevard, Mather, CA) or by mail to P.O. Box 269003, Sacramento, CA 95826. Packets will be accepted in person from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Application packets must include a letter of interest (two pages or less), a résumé, and no more than three letters of recommendation. About the Board of Education
The Sacramento County Board of Education derives its authority from the State Constitution (Article IX § 3.3) and laws of the State of California. The Board consists of seven elected members, each serving four-year terms. The
County Superintendent of Schools serves as secretary to the Board of Education. In addition to conducting its regular business, other Board responsibilities include hearing student expulsion appeals and interdistrict transfer appeals.
