English/Language Arts 9-12: General Observation

The review team notes that there is an inconsistency in the instructional materials used for instruction in English/language arts at this site. The adopted program for the district includes two core texts for each grade level: Holt, Elements of Literature and Holt, Elements of Writing.  Observation and teacher statements indicate that students in some classes are provided one of the two core texts, while others are provided with both texts.

English 9

There is an insufficient number of Holt, Elements of Literature and Holt, Elements of Writing. In four of the six sections reviewed, students are provided only Holt, Elements of Literature, 3rd Course.  In two of the six sections, students are provided only Holt, Elements of Writing, 3rd Course

English 10

There is an insufficient number of Holt, Elements of Writing, 4th Course for English 10.

English 11

There is an insufficient number of Holt, Elements of Literature, 5th Course and Holt, Elements of Writing, 5th Course. The team observed four sections of English 11. In three of the four sections, students are provided only Holt, Elements of Literature, 5th Course.  In two of the four sections, students are provided only Holt, Elements of Writing, 5th Course

English 12

There is an insufficient number of Holt, Elements of Writing and Holt, Elements of Literature, 6th Course.

Algebra 2

The review team visited four Algebra 2 classrooms.  Three of the four classes are provided McDougal Littell, Algebra & Trigonometry (2000).  One class (Room 222, Period 4: 27 students) is provided Prentice Hall, Advanced Algebra (1998).

Based on the age of the Prentice Hall, Advanced Algebra (1998) found in Room 222 (Period 4), we believe that the text may not be consistent with the content or cycle of the state curriculum frameworks and state board adopted content standards. The most recent State Curriculum Frameworks adoption date for Mathematics is 2000 (Draft Mathematics Framework is 2004) and the State content standards were adopted in 1997.

Algebra—Special Education

There is an insufficient number of American Guidance Service, Algebra (2004) textbooks for the 14 special education students enrolled in Algebra.

Physical/Earth Science

There is an insufficient number of Glencoe, Earth Science (2002) texts, which is the text used for classroom instruction. The students are provided Holt, Earth Science (1994) for home use.  Based on the age of the Holt materials, we believe the textbooks may not be consistent with the content and cycle of the state curriculum frameworks and State Board adopted content standards.

Physics

There is a sufficient number of Addison Wesley, Conceptual Physics (1991) textbooks.  However, based on the age of the materials found in this classroom, we believe the textbooks may not be consistent with content and cycle of the state curriculum frameworks and State Board adopted content standards. The most recent State Curriculum Frameworks adoption date for Science is 2003 and the State content standards were adopted in 1998.

Laboratory Supplies for Science

It was difficult to determine whether sufficient lab equipment and supplies are available for all science classes offered.  Most supplies and equipment are stored in classrooms and common areas between classrooms.  In the "upstairs" science classrooms, where most of the inventory is kept, some items are stored in the classroom, some in cupboards in unlabeled boxes and others in lab stations.

Some science classes have been moved to classrooms that are not designed to accommodate lab activities because the school is being remodeled.  The teachers in these classrooms have no access to the equipment and supplies at the school and do not have the facilities to properly and safely conduct labs. Assuming the remodeling will continue into the next and even future school years, the school needs to develop and implement a plan to ensure access for all students enrolled in lab science courses.

The district provided a copy of a supply/equipment order, dated March 31, 2005.  This list includes some carts and mobile cabinets, as well as supplies and equipment.  This order will help provide the basic supplies necessary to conduct labs and should enable teachers assigned to non-science classrooms to transport equipment and supplies as necessary to conduct lab activities.  The order also includes new microscopes and other equipment to replace outdated and inoperable equipment.

Economics

There are a sufficient number of Glencoe McGraw Hill, Economics Principals and Practices (1995) textbooks.  However, based on the age of the materials, we believe the textbooks may not be consistent with content and cycle of the state curriculum frameworks and State Board adopted content standards.  The most recent State Curriculum Frameworks adoption date for History-Social Science is 2001 and the State content standards were adopted in 1998.

U.S. Government

There are a sufficient number of Prentice Hall, Magruders American Government (1997) textbooks.  However, based on the age of the materials, we believe the textbooks may not be consistent with content and cycle of the state curriculum frameworks and State Board adopted content standards. The most recent State Curriculum Frameworks adoption date for History-Social Science is 2001 and the State content standards were adopted in 1998.

U.S. History, Grade 11, Room E7 (Period 2)

There is a sufficient number of Globe Fearon, Pacemaker, U.S. History.  It is noted, however, that students in all other U.S. History classes at this site are provided the text, Prentice Hall, America: Pathways to the Present (2002).  Globe Fearon, Pacemaker, U.S. History is not on the district list of adopted materials for U.S. History.
