Capital City (Sacramento City Unified School District) 2004-2005
Textbooks
English/Language Arts — Grades 1-6 — General Observation
Instructional materials issued to students are difficult to count due to the lack of detailed information on the book cards kept as school records. Folders indicate that "consumables" are issued to students but the consumables are not listed by title. It is unclear if all students were issued required instructional materials (workbooks) for Open Court, the district adopted program.
English/Language Arts — Grade 2
There are an insufficient number of instructional materials for students in Grade 2.
English/Language Arts — Grade 4
There are an insufficient number of instructional materials for students in Grade 4.
English/Language Arts — Grade 5
There are an insufficient number of instructional materials for students in Grade 5. There is no evidence of students being provided the Comprehension and Language Arts Skills workbook, the Writer's Workbook or the Inquiry Journal for Open Court.
English/Language Arts — Grade 6
There are an insufficient number of instructional materials for students in Grade 6. There is no evidence of students being provided the Comprehension and Language Arts Skills workbook, the Writer's Workbook or the Inquiry Journal for Open Court.
Mathematics — Grade 3
There are an insufficient number of instructional materials for students in Grade 3.
Geometry — Grades 9-12
Although there is a sufficient number of McDougal-Littell, Geometry books available for student use, the text is not one that has been adopted by the local governing board.
Social Studies and Science — Grades 1-3 — General Observation
The Open Court Social Studies/Science Connection Center Package is listed as the instructional materials provided for instruction of these two subject areas. This method of instructional delivery for students enrolled in independent study is a concern for two reasons: 1) The kit does not cover all standards but is designed to be used in conjunction with the Open Court English/language arts program, and 2) The kit would need to be available to all students, which means it would need to be available to be taken home by each student for use at home. There was only one connection center package available for the students.
Science — Grades 4, 5, and 6 — General Observation
The Open Court Social Studies/Science Connection Center Kit is listed as the sole instructional material provided for the instruction of science. The instructional delivery for students enrolled in independent study is a concern for two reasons: 1) It is unclear that the package covers all of the standards at each of these three grade levels, and 2) The kit would need to be made available to each student to be taken home for use. There was only one Connection Center Package available to students.
Moreover, even if the school had a sufficient number of the kits to allow each student to take the kit home, there is some concern that these kits may not provide a full standards-aligned program in science at those grade levels. We encourage you to revisit the program before the fall review to ensure that it covers all of the standards for each of those grade levels. However, with some reservation, the county is willing to accept that the program is sufficiently aligned for purposes of this first year of Williams inspection assuming that the school has a sufficient number of the kits.
Social Studies — Grade 4
There are an insufficient number of instructional materials for students in Grade 4.
Social Studies — Grade 5
There are an insufficient number of instructional materials for students in Grade 5. The district indicated that Harcourt Brace, Early United States, was adopted for use but there was no evidence that these materials were provided to students and the team did not observe any copies of this program at the school site.
Social Studies — Grade 6
There are an insufficient number of instructional materials for students in Grade 6. The district indicated that Harcourt Brace, Ancient World was adopted for use, but there was no evidence that these materials were provided to students and the team did not observe any copies of this program at the school site.
History 7
There is a sufficient number of Houghton Mifflin, World History Across the Centuries (1991) available for students in Grade 7. However, based on the age of the materials found in this classroom, we believe the textbooks may not be consistent with content and cycle of the state curriculum frameworks and state adopted content standards. (The most recent State Curriculum Frameworks adoption date for History-Social Science is 2001 and the State content standards were adopted in 1998.)
U.S. Government — Grade 12
There is a sufficient number of Prentice Hall, American Government (1997) texts for students in Grade 12. However, based on the age of the materials found in this classroom, we believe the textbooks may not be consistent with content and cycle of the state curriculum frameworks and state-adopted content standards. (The most recent State Curriculum Frameworks adoption date for History-Social Science is 2001 and the State content standards were adopted in 1998.)
Physical Science — Grades 9-12
There is a sufficient number of Holt, Earth Science (1994) texts for students enrolled in physical science. However, based on the age of the materials found in this classroom, we believe the textbooks may not be consistent with content and cycle of the state curriculum frameworks and state-adopted content standards. (The most recent State Curriculum Frameworks adoption date for Science is 2003 and the State content standards were adopted in 1998.)
Biology 1 and 2 — Grades 9-12
There are an insufficient number of instructional materials for students in biology in Grades 9-12.
