PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Each year the Cal-SOAP program at the Sacramento County Office of Education hires college students to serve as tutors and, to a lesser extent, as college advisors in middle schools and high schools throughout the county. (See "Fast Facts," Schools Served)
Tutors have an opportunity to work in a couple of settings:
> In AVID® classrooms, tutors are responsible for facilitating twice-weekly collaborative learning groups to which students bring difficult academic problems or questions.
> Cal-SOAP advising opportunities The Cal-SOAP advising program conducts a series of classroom workshops on college entrance requirements, transcript self-evaluations, college applications, and financial aid. Cal-SOAP also provides small-group advising sessions to assist selected students in maximizing their eligibility and exploring college options. Experienced tutors with strong presentation skills and knowledge of college of college entrance requirements may have the opportunity to assist the program coordinator and other staff members in organizing and making classroom presentations and conducting small-group sessions.
Tutors/Advisors work from 2-25 hours/week and earn $14/hour.
