Program Philosophy
Positive outcomes are attained for children through a transdisciplinary IEP team process in which parents and educators are partners.
An effective partnership is characterized by mutual respect; active and thoughtful listening to each point of view; honest and open sharing of knowledge, ideas and opinions; and cooperative, collaborative decision-making.
What is Offered
Range of Services for Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. High quality services for preschoolers and kindergarteners with autism as part of an articulated district autism program through eighth grade. Service options include:
- Structured Teaching Model Special Day Class based upon the TEACCH philosophy and incorporating other best practices as appropriate with children with autism including formal data recording systems, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS, Frost/ Bondy), Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA, Lovaas), Relationship Development Interven- tion (RDI, Gutstein) and Social Stories (Carol Gray).
- Non-Categorical Special Day Class using a play-based intervention model, employing modified structure and visual instruction strategies as appropriate for students with high functioning autism.
- Preschool Resource Specialist Program providing pre-kindergarten support in basic academic, study, and social skills development as appropriate for students with Asperger’s Syndrome.
- Home and Community Student Support Programs providing or extending instructional strategies to children and families through one-to-one instruction, shadow aides in commu- nity preschools, regularly scheduled family contacts and parent communication logs, and monthly parent group meetings.

- Special day classes-preschool and kindergarten-autism, including briefing on the basics of the TEACCH Structured Teaching Model by psychologist

Off-Site Services
The site can bring to you:
- Observation of your program and consultation from team members(s) in autism, program strategies, assessment, infant transition, and IEP development
- E-mail and/or phone follow-up for specific questions
- Materials packet outlining the basics of the strategies being employed by the BUSD program

When Site Is Available For Visits
- The best days to visit are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, or by special arrangement. Mondays or Fridays are best for off-site visits.
Number Of Visitors At One Time
- Our program can optimally accommodate up to four visitors at one time, but special arrangements can be made for larger groups for staggered classroom visitations.
