Peter Winkelman's farm was located on what now is Pleasant Grove School Road and Grantline Road. He donated the property for the school and the cemetery.
Peter W. Winkelman lived 17 miles from Sacramento and 3 and 1/4 of a mile from Elk Grove. He had 300 acres of land, worth about $6,000 in 1880. He was born in Switzerland in 1823. He emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1836, and lived for about a year in New York. Then he move to Indiana and lived there for about four years when he moved to Missouri. He came to California in 1846 with his brother. They returned to Missouri and came back to California with their families in 1850. He came across the plains and followed mining for about two years at Placerville and then settled in Sacramento County. He married Elizabeth Schnider on November 25, 1848. She was also a native of Switzerland. They had 8 children.
Children:
Ada Winkelman B. February 19, 1877 D. 1893
(Ada was the daughter of Mary and John Winkelman. She was the grand-daughter of Peter and Elizabeth)
Mary Winkelman was the daughter of Peter and the wife of John A. Winkelman. John is listed as a border (no last name given) in the 1870 Census. In the 1880 Census he is listed as Peter's son-in-law. Mary died two weeks after Ada Winkelman was born. Mary and John had another son named William. He died two years after Mary died at the age of four. At this time he was living at Elk Grove. It is believed that William is also buried at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery however, there is no official record of this.
It also appears that the Schirmer family and the Winkelman family were related. In the 1900 Census Elizabeth Winkelman was listed as the aunt of William Schirmer, and Matilda Russell and Emma Winkelman were listed as cousins of William Schirmer.
This information was obtained from James Ring. Peter Winkelman was his great-grandfather.
