Fred Stelter lived fifteen miles from Sacramento, and two and a half miles from Elk Grove. He was born in Hanover, Germany in 1829. He emigrated to the United States in 1846, and lived in St. Louis, Missouri until 1853. He followed mining in Placerville until 1860. He then settled in this county (Sacramento), and extensively engaged in farming. He owned two hundred and forty acres of land ,worth, with improvements, about $5,500 in 1880. Mr. Stelter drove a stagecoach from Sacramento to the town of Hangtown (now known as Placerville).
Mr. Stelter was married in 1860, to Miss C. Cenesions, a native of Germany. She died in 1868. He was married again in 1871, and his wife died in 1872. This was probably the person who had the initials W. A. J. S. This headstone is now missing from the Cemetery. Mr. Stelter was married again in 1874, to a Mrs. Wail, a native of Germany. He had two sons and nine daughters.
