(Born: February 28, 1893 - Died: November 22, 1988)

Matilda Winkelman was born on February 22, 1856. She was the daughter of Peter Winkelman, who donated the land for the Pleasant Grove School and Cemetery. She married David Russell and gave birth to their first child, Raymond DeWitt Russell, in Santa Cruz, California. When Raymond was only two years old his father died. Following that, when Raymond was thirteen years old, his mother died in 1906, at the age of 50 . Raymond then moved in and lived with his grandparents, Peter and Elizabeth Winkelman. Two years later he went to work for J. M. Derr, a home builder in the Elk Grove area. He then attended Elk Grove Union High School, but dropped out after three years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I, later retiring. On November 19, 1988, Raymond DeWitt Russell died at the age of 95 years. He is buried in the old part of the Pleasant Grove Cemetery along with his grandparents, the Winkelman's, and his mother, Matilda.

Matilda Winkelman Russell does not have a headstone. A record of her burial at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery was obtained from the Sacramento Bee.

This information was obtained from Jim & Virginia Ring. Jim is the great-grandson of Peter Winkelman.
