Sacramento County Board of Education Recognizes May 2005 Employees of the Month

The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is one of 58 county offices located throughout the state. Approximately 700 full-time and more than 2,500 part-time SCOE staff work year-round providing services which complement and supplement those offered by public school districts in the County of Sacramento. Over 230,000 K-12 students are served by public schools in Sacramento County.

May 2005 Classified Employee of the Month

Leanne Folsom, a staff secretary, was nominated by K-12 Reading/Language Arts Director Vicki Alterwitz and Arts Education Projects Coordinator Maureen Gemma for her contributions to the Instructional Support Services Division of the Sacramento County Office of Education. Ms. Folsom provides support to SCOE's Visual and Performing Arts and K-12 Reading/Language Arts programs and works out of the David P. Meaney Education Center building. She assists with planning, preparation of materials and numerous other elements required for meetings, trainings and events. Her supervisor says, "Leanne has brought an enthusiasm for learning new ideas and wonderful organizational skills for implementing many of our projects. She is thoughtful and often adds insightful suggestions on practical logistical information for our meetings and events. Leanne quietly sees what needs to be done and brings an energy and positive attitude to make sure it is completed." Her supervisor and colleagues commend Ms. Folsom for her willingness to "step up" when unexpected needs arise˜on one recent occasion, quickly securing replacement materials for a high-visibility workshop conducted in conjunction with the University of California, Office of the President, when the original materials did not arrive. Her supervisor says, "This Œabove and beyond‚ approach to her assignments clearly demonstrates Leanne's work ethic. She is an exemplary employee." Ms. Folsom has been employed by the Sacramento County Office of Education since February 2004.

May 2005 Certificated Employee of the Month

Brian Griffith, a Juvenile Court Schools teacher, was nominated by Principal Frances Smith-Small for his contributions to the Sacramento County Office of Education. Brian Griffith works at SCOE's El Centro Jr.-Sr. High School campus located within the B.T. Collins Juvenile Center (also known as Juvenile Hall). He serves students ranging from grades nine through 12 who are wards of the Sacramento County Probation Department. Mr. Griffith is highly regarded for his articulation and organizational skills, which contribute greatly to his success as an educator. His lessons reflect detailed planning and attention to the individualized needs of his students. "He always creates interesting and fascinating assignments that meet educational standards," says his supervisor. She especially commends Mr. Griffith for his work in the S2 classroom unit, which serves students with moderate-to-high risk of repetitive, assaultive behavior. She says, "He has established control over his classrooms and is able to maintain it using a variety of approaches. He admirably meets the daily challenge of serving a student population with diverse learning abilities." Mr. Griffith has been employed by the Sacramento County Office of Education since November 2000.
