The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is one of 58 county offices located throughout the state. Approximately 650 regular and more than 950 temporary and substitute SCOE staff work year-round providing services which complement and supplement those offered by public school districts in Sacramento County. Over 230,000 K-12 students are served by public schools in Sacramento County.
May 2013 Classified Employee of the Month
Jeffrey Alcalá, Behavior Management Technician (BMT), was nominated by Principal Lauren Roth for his contributions to the Sacramento County Office of Education. He works with students at SCOE's Leo A. Palmiter Jr./Sr. High School campus, where he is instrumental in creating a Positive Acknowledgment System (PAS). Says his supervisor, "Jeff has established excellent rapport with students. He assists students as they work through difficult situations and develop positive peer relations." Mr. Alcalá collaborates with teachers, Para-Educators, and staff and supports them with suggestions to help attain behavior successes with individual students. In addition to facilitating Behavior Support meetings, he participates in IEP (Individualized Education Program) meetings. Concludes his supervisor, "Jeff is respectful of families, dedicated, and is willing to help in any way he can. He always sees the positive in every situation." Mr. Alcalá has been employed by the Sacramento County Office of Education since January 2011.
May 2013 Certificated Employee of the Month
Owen Elmer, ED Teacher, was nominated by Principal Lauren Roth for his contributions to the Sacramento County Office of Education. He works with Palmiter students who have emotional and behavioral challenges. As a member of a collaborative team, he teaches in Palmiter's Sustainable Environments Academy. His supervisor says, "Owen is always student-centered in his teaching approach. He truly encourages his students' success." Mr. Elmer has served for the past two years as Teacher in Charge and as lead coach of the school's Academic Bowl team—which in 2011 won first place in PowerPoint presentation and the competition's Super Quiz in 2012. Mr. Elmer participates in student study meetings, the ED Leadership and Safety Committees, and the School Site Council. Concludes his supervisor, "Owen is an excellent teacher who provides educationally effective, interest-based lessons. Students respect Mr. Elmer, particularly those who are having difficulty." Mr. Elmer has been employed by the Sacramento County Office of Education since January 2006.
