The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is one of 58 county offices located throughout the state. Approximately 700 full-time and more than 2,500 part-time SCOE staff work year-round providing services which complement and supplement those offered by public school districts in the County of Sacramento. Over 230,000 K-12 students are served by public schools in Sacramento County.
October 2008 Classified Employees of the Month
Marie Wagnon, an Information Systems Analyst, was nominated by Information Systems/Payroll Coordinator Chris Gilbert for her contributions to the Sacramento County Office of Education. Ms. Wagnon provides financial system support to SCOE and eight school districts in the county. The eight school districts require the use of SCOE's financial system to pay employees and manage their fiscal operations. Among Ms. Wagnon's work is providing technical support, process support and training to district staff. She also acts as a liaison between SCOE and QSS, SCOE's financial system vendor. Ms. Wagnon has played an instrumental role in the successful data conversion and unification of four districts' financial data into one new district, Twin Rivers Unified School District. She assisted the districts in performing pre/post-conversion data cleanup. Ms. Wagnon gathered the data from each of the individual districts and mapped it to its new value in the new district. As a result of her diligence, her attention to detail and her familiarity with fiscal operations, the Twin Rivers Unified School District commenced operations on July 1, 2008 and produced its first payroll on July 31, 2008—with no major system related issues. Ms. Wagnon is known for being helpful, friendly and "willing to go the extra mile" to help her supervisor and fellow teammates. Her supervisor says, "Marie always provides the highest level of customer support to our online districts. She is smart and is always looking for ways to increase her knowledge of our financial system and operational processes." Ms. Wagnon has been employed by the Sacramento County Office of Education since July 1995.
October 2008 Certificated Employees of the Month
Guy Holman, a Teacher, was nominated by Principal Sharon Holstege for his contributions to the Special Education Program of the Sacramento County Office of Education. Mr. Holman's classroom is located at SCOE's Rio Linda Junior High School site, where he works with students who have severe disabilities. He uses thematic instruction to inspire and teach his 10 students, who range in age from 7th to 9th grade. His supervisor says, "If you walk into his classroom, you might find yourself in the middle of a unit on summer with students listening to a book on ocean animals; doing an art project where they are 'surfing' or 'scuba diving;' and often there is a culminating cooking project. In this instance, it is making a smoothie for a hot summer day. And since his students have significant disabilities, Guy is infusing each student's IEP (Individualized Education Plan) goals into each activity. He has students using switches to make the smoothies and having them make choices on which ice cream flavor or toppings they want." Mr. Holman is known for maintaining good working relationships with families and will often host family events in the classroom. Concludes his supervisor, "Guy strives to make sure that his students are given the same 'rites of passage' in school as other students—including promotion ceremonies, being in the yearbook, and other junior high activities. He creates memories that families treasure." Mr. Holman has been a Sacramento County Office of Education employee since August 2003.
