English Learners Demographic Summary cover

English Learners Demographic Summaries

Since Time magazine declared Sacramento as "America's most integrated city" in 2002, the schools in Sacramento County have continued to reflect this richness in diversity. The 13 school districts in Sacramento County enroll substantial numbers of English Learners (EL), also known as Limited-English Proficient (LEP) students.

Although this population is linguistically diverse with students representing more than 54 language groups, more than half of the English Learners speak Spanish as their first language.

State, county, and district information is presented in the following summaries, compiled from data submitted by districts to the California Department of Education (CDE) through the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS), information from the Language Census, and results from the California English Language Development Test (CELDT).
