The Scholarship Requirement (Your Academic Achievement!)

For both the UC and CSU systems, as well as many other universities, students must reach a certain level of academic achievement, based on a calculation of grades (measured by the GPA) and test scores, to be eligible for admission. Students should refer to each system’s Eligibility Index (UC or CSU) to see if they are eligible. The minimum GPA for the University of California for students applying in Fall 2010 is 3.0; for California State University campuses the minimum is 2.0. But remember, test scores effect eligibility and lower GPA's will require higher test scores.

The GPA is calculated based on all “a-g” subjects completed in grades 10 and 11 (including summer sessions).  Some impacted CSU campuses may also use freshman grades.

Grades: Students are required to have grades of C or better in the 15 units of “a-g” courses.  Courses used to satisfy the “a-g” requirements in which the student earns D or F grades must be repeated, and students must earn grades of C or higher in the repeated courses.

  • The repeated grades are then used in calculating the GPA.
  • For UC’s, each course in which a grade of D or F has been received may be repeated only once.
  • Pass/ Fail or Credit/No Credit: Cannot be used to satisfy “a-g” requirements.
  • Incomplete (no grade): Cannot be used to satisfy “a-g” requirements.
  • If a student earns a C grade (or higher) in an “a-g” course and repeats the course, the repeated grade will not be used in calculating the GPA.
*Note: there are special rules regarding D and F grades earned in Chemistry, Mathematics, and a Language Other than English.  In some cases, when the D and F grades are in the first semester, the courses do not necessarily have to be repeated, but students should consider repeating them because such grades lower the student’s GPA. See individual college requirements for guidance.
