This first volume familiarizes the reader with the struggle involved in developing African American education in 19th century Sacramento. According to the preface, the book was written to celebrate the tenacity, courage and ingenuity of the African American community, and those people of conscience of the white community who gave assistance when societal roadblocks and prejudices threatened to impede progress to educate African American children.
