The Early Childhood Program includes deaf and hard of hearing children and their families from birth through kindergarten. Deaf and hearing teachers and staff work together to provide a developmentally appropriate learning environment which fosters the growth of the whole child. Learning through play and exploration is primary within the context of a language and literacy rich environment. All children are encouraged to become independent in their self-help skills as well as begin to learn social skills allowing them to work, learn and play with their peers. They are busy building their language and knowledge of the world around them.
Visual communication is crucial to a deaf child’s linguistic, cognitive, social and emotional growth and must begin as early as possible both at home and at school. A solid first language base and a positive sense of self provide the foundation for each child to acquire high levels of proficiency in language and literacy needed for academic success. Children are provided access to their environment through the use of American Sign Language along with the development of spoken English skills when appropriate. Family is the most important part of a young child’s life. One of our main goals is to develop a long term partnership with each child’s family. Parent’s intimate knowledge of their child is viewed as a valuable and highly respected source of knowledge. We strive to provide each family with the kind of support, information and opportunities that help parents make informed decisions, develop good communication with their deaf child, and become effective advocates who are knowledgeable about their child’s rights and their rights as parents.
