Teachers of the Year 2017 Honored by River Cats

Fans Cheer Teachers at April 23 Game Against Las Vegas 51s

Baseball fans at Raley Field cheered as the Sacramento River Cats paid tribute to the Sacramento County Teachers of the Year 2017 before the start of the April 23 game.

The two reigning County Teachers of the Year, Nichole Harshbarger (1st grade teacher at Kingswood K–8 in San Juan U.S.D.) and George Helms (1st grade teacher at Arnold Adreani Elementary in Elk Grove U.S.D.), were among the honorees. Both teachers threw a ceremonial first pitch. Denise Knorr (6th grade teacher at Florin Elementary in Elk Grove U.S.D.) interpreted the National Anthem in sign language.

After the on-field recognition, the River Cats hosted honorees and their guests at a reception where they received words of praise from Dave Gordon, Sacramento County Superintendent of School and Greg Coletti, Vice President of Partner Services for the Sacramento River Cats. The event was sponsored by the River Cats, Supercuts, and SCOE’s School of Education.

Last month, the Teachers of the Year were also honored with an on-court ceremony during a Sacramento Kings game.

The Sacramento County Teachers of the Year Program is coordinated annually by the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) to recognize the achievements of local educators and to raise awareness of the valuable role that teachers play in the lives of their students and in the community.
